healing therapy insights: biodynamic craniosacral therapy (BCST)

Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy is a gentle, non-invasive, hands-on treatment for the whole body.  Performed on a massage table, the client is fully clothed and the touch is light and still.  This treatment supports the health of the whole being, especially the nervous system, the system responsible for all of the body’s functioning,  and that is constantly sending and receiving information. You'd be amazed at how "on" our nervous system can be with out us really taking notice that its being worn down until its too late and we feel really out sorts. Most times when this happens, we don't even realize its our nervous system that needs the help.

Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapists understand how a healthy nervous system performs and usinh this ability, they can identify the parts of the nervous system that are not performing optimally then use available energy within the body to bring itself back into balance.

Anyone can benefit from BCST-newborns, elders, the frail or ill. It's useful in helping with injuries to the bones and tissues (I have had my share of sessions as a results of wiping out on my mountain bike!) and it's also an effective modality for exploring and resolving issues related to the past (i.e prenatal and birth trauma). Early trauma can create an unconscious belief system that is not relevant in the adult and BCST helps identify and release these beliefs so as to shift to real or more appropriate beliefs.

I've used BCST to support other deep energy work as well. It has been a huge help to calm my system during and after big shifts that were needed but left me/ my system feeling a little "shocked". I've also used BCST during my recovery from major foot surgery as well as to help with a concussion. It truly has been a Godsend during some really uncomfortable times in my life.

Even just day-to-day life can create emotional trauma and physical strains and this work addresses the whole system, creating a safe environment where the body can gain new perspectives and a healthy resolution of issues. The Biodynamic Craniosacral practitioner acts as the facilitator for that resolution.

What can you expect a typical session to look & feeling like?

A typical session will vary with practitioners but will generally begin by sitting and talking with your therapist about any of your health concerns; you'll talk about health history and what you would like to get out of the session.

During the session, you will be fully clothed lying on a massage table in a supported and comfortable way. It is important that you feel comfortable and safe at all times so you will want to ask for any adjustments you need to the lighting, temperature, etc. Your therapist may ask you from time to time what you are experiencing, and will help you to stay present with whatever your experience is.

Session work involves a very light, gentle touch. Your therapist may begin at your feet, at your head (cranium) or on your sacrum (the triangular bone at the bottom of the spine), however depending your concerns, they may go to any area of the body that needs to be worked with.

Sessions can last anywhere from a half and hour to an hour or an hour and a half depending on the therapist you are working with and what your needs are. During that time, the therapist will quietly, gently hold parts of your body, listening to the subtle rhythms and tracking changes in your system. In this process the therapist will listen for what your body’s indicates is the priority for that particular session. It may take multiple sessions to achieve the results you want.

During the session, you may:

  • Relax so deeply that you fall asleep
  • Enter a quiet meditation-like state
  • Feel as if you are dreaming while awake
  • Experience memories or insights
  • Feel warm, a softening of the body, a feeling of widening or floating
  • At times, you may experience other kinds of sensations as energy that has been held in the body is released. This work my help you let go of patterns that are blocking or compromising.

At the end of the session, you may:

  • Feel relaxed, but also energized
  • Breathe more fully and deeply
  • Stand straighter and taller; feel/ look taller
  • Feel more comfortable in your body
  • A new sense of calm/ peace
  • Have improved sleep

This healing therapy really is like magic- its so simple yet has profound affect.
