make time for play

Welcome to ".play."! A bit of The Light Side dedicated to good old fashioned fun and play!

One of the best ways I know how to keep life light is to balance your world with play. Play time is time to disconnect from phones, tablets and responsibilities and tap in to your inner child, get outside, be active, explore, learn and laugh just like we did when we were kids.

Although it was not always this way, my life now is full of playful adventures. I spend many of my weekends in Canmore & Banff, usually frolicking in some playful capacity in the forests of the Rockies.

While getting away from it all can add a heightened sense of adventure, you don't have to go anywhere to play. That's probably one of the best things about playtime-- you can do it anywhere and anytime you want. You can play at home, in your own backyard, while away somewhere great for the weekend (or, longer!), alone or with others. And, the best is if you have little people in your life (either your own or, in my case as an Auntie, ones that you can borrow); you can jump into their world for a little while and basque in their Joyful innocence and wonder. Cuz I mean, really...who doesn't love blowing bubbles and drinking imaginary tea at a 3 years olds tea party every now and then?!?

...Jam-Jams (pyjama's) & swimming suit tea party play time with my nieces. "Can I offer you a refill, Miss B?"

Over the past few years, I've done a lot of work to let go of the belief that busy is better (#StopTheGlorificationOfBusy) and play is at the centre of the positive impact this has had on my life. I now make time to indulge my creative side and get crafty-- time to draw, color and #Create something! I make time to play board games (I hardly ever win, but I give my all to those Scrabble battles!), to go for bike rides, picnics and walks and to see the world through the looking glass of my inner child, with a refreshing and natural sense of wonder and enthusiasm that allows me to be captivated and inspired by the simple beauty of things like a sunset, the forest, flowers and the scent of the air that might otherwise go unnoticed.

Play might look and feel different to each of us; that which is rooted within and evokes a natural sense of childlike Joy is unique. Thus, it's about paying attention to the things, activities and places that bring about a feeling of child-like Joy within you. Maybe its doing something you haven't done since you were a kid like making snow angels, swinging on a swing or playing eye-spy on your next road trip. Sometimes I like taking a stroll down the toy isle to peek at what Barbie's been up to!

Whatever it is that lets you feel like a kid, even for a moment, let it exist in your world. Make room for these things. Realize and appreciate the simple Joy they bring. Joy is the catalyst for all great things; return to this natural state of Joy as often as you can. Feel gratitude for the simple magnificence that is available through your inner child and watch Joy transform your world.

Happy Playing!

With Love & Light,
