Green smoothies and juicing are everywhere these days and we couldn't be happier. Not only is it quick and easy to make them at home, but its also now so convenient to grab them on the go with all of the specialty smoothie and juice bars opening up around the city. 

I used to do a fair bit of juicing, and I still do now and again especially when I want fresh juice to use in my smoothies, but overall I find that making smoothies is a bit quicker and more convenient. Thus, I definitely been in the smooth groove lately. Either way though, I love drinking my greens as an easy way to get a large part of my daily nutrients in one serving!

I was recently away at a workshop and while I was traveling the thing I missed the most (other than my sweetie and my cozy king size bed) was my daily green smoothie! The accommodations I had were lovely- I did have a kitchen and that made me happy because I could cook my own meals but there was not a blender. Nor did the town I was staying in (a very small town near Albany, NY) have many fresh juice or smoothie bar options (i.e. none!). So, alas! I was limited to the occasional trip into the next county for my green smoothie and latte fix until I got home. 

Now that I am back, I am appreciating my kitchen, my blender and the yummy greens and fruit from the farmers market more than ever and I thought it was the perfect time to share some of my go-to smoothie recipes with you! 

...smoothies aren't just tasty, around here they are considered a work of art, too! 

On an average day, I rise early (gotta beat the morning commute traffic into downtown!), and while I love a big breakfast on weekends, I find that I don't have much of an appetite until about 10AM. So, a light and tasty smoothie is the perfect way to get something in my tummy that gives me energy to face the day. I find that smoothies are pretty filling so drinking one and having some almonds and a piece of fruit usually keeps me more than happy until lunch. 

As mornings can be pretty rushed around my house (I like to stay in my bed until the last possible minute!!), I tend to keep it simple when it comes to ingredients. My go-to recipe, the signature "On The Light Side" smoothie, consists of kale, mango, banana and almond milk. I always have at least those ingredients on hand so its super fast to whip up. When I have more time or have just been to the market and my fridge is nice and full with variety, I'll switch things up and experiment with different flavours. I add E3 Live my smoothies. E3 Live is an all-organic superfood, it is 100% Aphanizomenon flos-aquae (AFA; a wild-harvested organic blue-green algae) in a fresh-frozen liquid form. It has over 65 vitamins, minerals, amino acids and essential fatty acids; its a plant-based superfood, is non-GMO, vegan and a rich source of chlorophyll. Add to that the benefits of kale/ spinach and other fruit, my delicious little smoothies are the healthiest thing I put in my body each day.

While usually an advocate of "fresh is best" wherever possible, for smoothies I prefer to use organic frozen fruits; this saves me a ton of time, especially with mango as you don't have to muck around with cutting or risk compromising your work attire with splatter or rogue fruit flesh. The frozen fruit also makes the smoothie cold and refreshing and compared to big ice cubes, is gentler on your blender, but you can always use the cubes if you wish not to stray from fresh fruit options.

"On The Light Side" Smoothie: 

  • 1 cup of fresh kale
  • 1/2 banana 
  • 1/2 cup of frozen mango (add more to your liking) 
  • 1/2 cup almond milk 
  • 1 oz E3 Live Frozen Super Food (optional)

Want a Little More Pizzaz? Try adding fresh mint for added refreshing flavor and try bee pollen, chia and/or hemp seeds for added health benefits!

Mix in blender until smooth; add more milk as needed. 

"Let It Shine, Sunshine" Smoothie: 

  • 1/2 cup of fresh spinach (kale works too!) 
  • 1/4 cup of frozen mango 
  • 1/4 cup of fresh pineapple 
  • 1/2 banana 
  • 1/4 cup of fresh frozen coconut flesh (available in Calgary at Community Natural Foods) 
  • 1/2 cup of fresh orange juice 
  • 1 oz E3 Live Frozen Super Food (optional)

Mix in blender until smooth; add more juice (or water) as needed. 

"Strawberry Light Cake" Smoothie: 

  • 1/2 cup of fresh kale 
  • 1/2 fresh or frozen strawberries 
  • 1/2 cup fresh frozen coconut flesh 
  • 1 tbsp raw cacao powder 
  • 1/2 cup of almond milk 

Mix in blender until smooth; add more milk as needed.
